A classic but tired Moderne-style bungalow in downtown Ventura, CA, was in need of renovation and a front-yard rethink. Built when the street was quiet and slow, the house now found itself at the corner of a busy, 4-way stop sign controlling loud and frequent traffic flow from all sides. The busy-ness also stripped the house of privacy, sadly forcing occupants to keep windows shut and blinds closed to the surrounding ocean views and sea breezes.

The new design highlights the best aspects of the home’s original style while completely rethinking both the interior and exterior in order to support a truly modern lifestyle and foster connection to the surrounding environment. Various layers of walls and plantings – with a focus on texture, color, and depth of form – establish the physical and visual separation needed to create a private interior space while providing passers-by with beautiful pocket views of the house.
