Workbench | Sculpture + Structure

Designed for a Los Angeles-based visual effects and AR studio, this project functions as both aperture and experience. The geometry of the piece’s polished brass panels creates a faceted, three-dimensional entry space that sets the stage for the manipulation of light and sound that takes place within. The design also functions as way finder for the building’s plain white facade by creating a sense of sequence, and gives back visually to a street that is dominated by industrial-park exteriors and rollup doors.

Equal parts sculpture and structure, it is self-supporting and set within the linear alcove that surrounds the existing entrance. The piece’s panels tip outward from the base, playing with the visitor’s perception of balance, and reflect the angularity of the building’s canted interior walls.
